Iowa Independent Film Festival in Mason City!

Enjoy the finest independent films from around the world at the IOWA INDEPENDENT FILM FESTIVAL!! Head to downtown Mason City on Friday, August 18th, and Saturday, August 19th, for 29 films! The 10th annual IIFF features feature films, short films, and documentaries, and discussions with some of the filmmakers! Films will be screened at The Main Event (112 2nd Street Southeast) and a student film showcase will be head in the Mason City Room at the Mason City Public Library (225 2nd Street Southeast). Tickets cost $30 per person and include access to ALL movies on both days as well as coffee, lunch, dinner, and popcorn on Saturday! Purchase tickets at the door or in advance HERE! Tips for Buying a Home with a Septic System

Understanding where the waste from your home goes might be one of the least glamorous aspects of homeownership but it is of the utmost importance. Since many of the homes throughout North Iowa are located in rural areas, the homes have a septic system instead of a sewer line connection. A septic system works by collecting the waste water from a home’s kitchen and bathroom into a tank on the property. There are bacterias and compounds within the tank that help decompose the material and convert it into a harmless byproduct that can be eventually absorbed back into the ground. This is often a greener system than traditional sewer systems. Unfortunately, improperly maintained septic systems can lead to backups causing costly clean ups and dangerous contamination of the local soil. Buying a home with a septic system? Here is all the information you need to keep your septic system running properly for the health and comfort of you and your family!

 

Inspect the Septic System During the Home Inspection

Not all home inspectors have the right expertise when it comes to septic systems. If the home inspector you hire does not have experience in this area, hire a septic professional to inspect the systems operation as well as the land around it. This will ensure that it is already functioning properly and help you avoid any potential damage to your yard or, worse, your home!

 

Maintaining Your Home’s Septic System

You’ve ensured that the septic system is working properly upon buying your new home. Now, it’s time to make sure that you maintain it! Avoid putting any oils down your home’s drain and be sure to use a food disposal system to help prevent malfunctions and backups within the system. Add bacteria supplements to the tank by flashing a bacteria pack down the toilet based on the directions from the manufacturer. If your septic system has an electric pump, consider installing a backup battery and/or water level monitoring alarm for additional protection. All septic systems should be pumped out every 3 to 5 years, based on household usage, to help ensure continued functionality. In the unfortunate case that your system does backup, do not run any additional water into the drains, unless absolutely necessary, as this will just perpetuate the issue. Hire a professional septic system servicer to evaluate and repair the problem immediately.

Fill your bellies in Mason City at the 14th annual Up in Smoke BBQ Bash!!! The Globe Gazette is sponsoring this favorite yearly event this weekend, July 21st and 22nd, in East Park! Come dine on the best BBQ in the Midwest as teams compete for the coveted title!  


The Kansas City Barbeque Society has sanctioned the competition and teams will be cooking for certified KCBS judges. Enjoy incredible brisket, chicken, pork shoulder, ribs, and more! There will be an overall grand and reserve champion along with divisional winners. Other competitions include desserts, Spam and Anything Butt!


Although food is the main attraction, there are lots of other fun activities and live music planned for the weekend festivities! Check out everything happening at this incredible, FREE community event in beautiful Mason City!

Summertime means the return of one of our favorite annual traditions: County Fairs! No state knows how to do a county fair quite like Iowa! And, the 2017 North Iowa Fair is one of the best of the best! Mark your calendars for Wednesday, July 19th, through Sunday, July 23rd, so you do not miss out on any of the fun at the North Iowa Events Center (3700 4th Street Southwest, Mason City). With amusement rides, carnival games, delicious food, live music, farming events, events at the Mason City Motor Speedway and so much more, there is something for everyone at the fair! Come celebrate everything that we love about North Iowa at this year’s fantastic fair!

The theme for this year’s North Iowa Fair is “On The Rise”! There are many incredible events and activities planned for you and your family to spend time rising above the fair!

2nd Annual Hot Air Balloon Rally

  • Come to the NIEC Green Space on Friday evening, Saturday morning and evening, and Sunday morning for tethered rides ($10), sponsored balloon rides, walk-in balloons ($1), “Glow Shows”, and more! Call (641) 423-3811 to learn more about purchasing tickets.

Carolina Helicopters

  • Take a helicopter ride to see a bird’s eye view of the fair every day of the event. Rides cost only $20 per person!

River City Radio Control “Fun Fly”

  • See the most incredible radio control airplanes and more during the “Fun Fly” on Saturday, July 22nd, from 10:00 am until sundown. There may be opportunities to co-pilot one of the radio control devices.

Cannonball Day this Saturday in Mason City!

Enjoy a day filled with railroad fun at Cannonball Day! Head to East Park (717 3rd Street Northeast) in beautiful Mason City on Saturday, June 24th, from 9:30 am to 8:00 pm for lots of family fun! Now in its 12th year, this event celebrates trains and railroad history. The festivities go on all day with a kids fun run, talent competition, inflatable playgrounds, car show, Smoky the Train rides, live music, and so much more! Stick around for the delicious Mason City Evening Lions Club Chicken BBQ. All proceeds from this event benefit the maintanence, preservation, and restoration of the Cannonball 457, East Park's own Minneapolis & St. Louis Railroad steam locomotive.

 

 

2017 Cannonball Kids Fun Run

Register your children for the annual Cannonball Kids Fun Run. Each participant will receive a T-shirt, medal, and tickets for Cannonball Day activities. There will also be water and healthy snacks available at the end of the race. Click HERE for the downloadable registration form!

Check out the Midwest’s largest FREE marching band competition this Memorial Day Weekend in Mason City! It’s time for the 2017 North Iowa Band Festival! Now in its 79th year, this favorite annual festival features incredible live musical performances, spectacular community parade, carnival, marketplace, and so much more! North Iowa Farmers Market Opens this Friday!!

This Friday, May 19th, marks the opening day of the North Iowa Farmers Market! Find the best produce, artisan goods, baked goods, eggs, and so much more from incredible local vendors every week until October 27th! The market is open on Tuesdays and Fridays from 4:00 pm to 6:30 pm. It is located on the corner of 1st Street and Delaware in Mason City. Come meet the newest member of the North Iowa Farmers Market team this Friday! The North Iowa Farmers Market is excited by the recent hire of Sarah Tweeten as the new Market Manager. An Iowa native, Sarah graduated from Iowa State University with a BS degree in Agricultural Communications. She volunteered with AgriCorps in Ghana after graduation, working in agricultural development. She now works for the Worth County Extension and Outreach office. Sarah will be a key role for the North Iowa Farmers Market as its Market Manager. She serves as the market representative while it is open, acts as a liason between vendors and the board, and will be managing NIFM’s marketing and social media. Welcome Sarah Tweeten to NIFM!

Help Support Our Community with the Empty Bowl Project!

The Empty Bowl Project is back for another year! Help support those in need in our community and celebrate our local artistic talent by purchasing an Empty Bowl now through Friday, May 19th! As an added bonus, you will get some beautiful, handmade wares for your Mason City home!


There are 100 Empty Bowls for sale at Mason City’s new CENT Credit Union (25 West Street and 3124 4th Street SW). All proceeds from the bowls benefit those most in need in our community. The Empty Bowl project supports Hawkeye Harvest Food Bank (122 South Adams Avenue, Mason City), a great local organization that provides emergency food for families referred to the organization. Help make a difference in someone’s life and buy one of these beautiful bowls!


The Empty Bowls were designed by Pamela Bergo Coffey, Peggy Cornick, Rebecca Hill, Linda Hunt, Margie Kline, Bill Mateer, Tina Wilhm, Katie Jo Wold, Pepsi Beverages Company, and Newman Catholic High School art students. Bowls created by professional artists are available for a $50 or more donation. Bowls by individuals and students are available for a $20 or more donation. Each bowl purchase also includes a ticket to the Empty Bowl Luncheon which will be held Friday, May 19th.


The Empty Bowl project raised over $3,000 last year. Let’s beat that number to help Hawkeye Harvest Food Bowl to reach even more in our community this year!

Firehouse Breakfast Fundraiser this Weekend!

The Mason City Fire Department is hosting a special breakfast this weekend for the community to enjoy. Head over to the Fire Department Headquarters (350 5th Street Southwest) on Saturday, April 8th, from 9:00 am to 11:00 am for a delicious pancake and sausage breakfast.

 

The breakfast is a benefit for the Mason City Fire Department’s Fire Explorer program. The MCFD Explorer Post 2300 is an hands on career exploration program for youth ages 14 to 20 who are interested in fire and emergency medical services. This year long program provides them with weekly training in a variety of skills, including CPR and first aid and extensive firefighting. It is a fantastic program for the youth in our community. The nation-wide program sponsors camps, competitions, and conferences throughout the year that members of our local explorer post attend.


The firehouse breakfast has been conceived off and will be served by the MCFD Fire Explorers to help them pay for competitions they plan to attend this April and August in Minnesota. Tickets for the breakfast are $10.00.


Come support these amazing Mason City youth and have a delicious firehouse breakfast this Saturday!
