Make Moving Day A Breeze With These Helpful Tips!

After the excitement you feel when you Buy a new home in North Iowa, the reality of having to move starts to settle in. Don’t panic! We know that moving can be stressful, but there are things you can do to make the process go smoother. The most important thing: Plan Ahead! Here are the helpful steps you can take in the time leading up to moving day to help make moving feel like a breeze!

During The Weeks Leading Up To The Move

  1. The best movers in North Iowa book up quickly so it is in your interest to begin searching for a great mover right away and book them as soon as you choose one.
  2. Remove the stress of having to clean the house you currently own by hiring a cleaning service to come to the home the day after moving day.
  3. If you are moving within the same city, transfer all utilities. If moving to a new city, schedule the disconnect of utilities in your current home and the start of service in the new home. Have internet and cable scheduled for installation the day after moving.
  4. Purge your possessions of unwanted furniture, clothing, and toys. Donate items that are still in good condition so they can be enjoyed by someone else. You can also help cover some of your moving expenses by holding a garage sale.
  5. Start collecting boxes, bubble wrap, tape, and other packing gear.
  6. Now is a good time to pack those items you won’t need anytime in the near future, such as winter gear/clothing. You will fill far less overwhelmed if you spread your packing out over several weeks and not all at the last minute.

Day Before Moving

  1. Put stickers and/or labels on furniture and boxes so it is clear to your movers where the items should go in the new home.
  2. Stock up on easy to eat, healthy snacks and bottled water for yourself, your family, and your movers.
  3. Withdraw some cash from your bank account so that you can tip your movers after their hard work tomorrow.
  4. Drop your beloved pet(s) off at a family or friend’s house the night prior to the move. This will keep them safely out of everyone’s way tomorrow and remove them from a situation that can be highly stressful for them and you.
  5. Pack essential items, such as toiletries, clothing, and medicine, into an overnight bag. Limit it to just those items that you will need the first couple nights in your new home.

Moving Day

  1. Set your alarm early to allow yourself time to finalize any preparations before the movers arrive.
  2. Pack jewelry, important documents, and other smaller valuables in your own car to keep them safely in your possession throughout the move.
  3. Throw out or pack up any final items, namely toiletries you used last night and perishable food items from your kitchen.
  4. Walk through your home one more time to give all cabinets, drawers, and closets a final once over.
  5. Monitor your movers while they work to make sure your items are being handled with care.
  6. Head over to your new home and label any rooms that might not be obvious to the movers once they get there, such as which bedrooms belong to which family members. Proper labeling will help the movers put your items in their correct location and help you as you begin to unpack.
  7. After your movers have left and everything is in your new home, allow yourself a moment to relax! Although the moving portion might be successfully completed, you have the task of unpacking still ahead of you!
